We're newbies with two new packages picked up April 21. For both hives, the queens were released from the cages, but we haven't actually spotted her. One hive seems to be thriving--lots of egg, frames significantly drawn out, lots of activity, and today we saw larvae.
The other hive is significantly behind. Much less drawn out, consuming much less sugar water. I saw some but not a lot of eggs for the first time today. There was also the start of one much larger cell that from my novice eyes I have no idea what it is. Maybe the beginning of an attempt to make a new queen? I'm concerned with the stark contrast in the two hives.
How can we tell if its the queen laying eggs or workers. What should we be looking for? What are our options at this juncture? Can anyone come by and take a look and advise?
Thanks
Randy Dodd
