I agree the ice is essential, but I’ve been using a method, recommended by my pharmacist brother-in-law Bob Barber, since 1968 with stellar success. Within 5 minutes, quicker is better, put an ammonia soaked cotton ball on the site. The ammonia neutralizes the venom and the next day I have trouble finding the site. Before I started using this method, I experienced massive swelling, redness, and intense itching. When my then 6 year old daughter climbed on a trailer housing a yellow jacket nest, she was covered with stings. The next day we could only see the entry points, no local reaction. I could go on with more examples of my personal experience, but you get the idea. The ice cube goes on top of the ammonia saturated cotton ball. Keep up the treatment for 15 minutes. dolly Dolly Daniel, RN, BC, BSN, CDE From: ocba-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org [mailto:ocba-bounces AT lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Alwyn Smith We've discussed this in my household extensively. As it happens, my wife is a research immunologist working in dermatology. Her advice is surprisingly simple: put ice on the stings as soon as possible for as long as you can stand it. She insists that there is no better remedy. I don't understand all the jargon, but apparently, treating the area with ice slows or stops the chain reaction of events that happens with any immune response. Apparently, over the long term, moderating your body's immune response to a sting is your best bet against developing an allergy to apitoxin.
