Shannon,

You may be happy to know that Skee's reaction (both the first and second time) is completely expected and normal. Localized reactions, even large localized reactions, at the sting site aren't a cause for concern. It is systemic reactions that are potentially dangerous.

Localized reactions often diminish with repeated exposures and may eventually disappear completely. It took a few years for that to happen with me. Now, after the initial pain wears off, I cannot tell where I have been stung. But when I was first starting out, my hands and forearm would swell up like Popeye's for several days and itch like crazy. Benadryl helps, especially if you take it as soon as possible after being stung.

Buddy Marterre, a surgeon and beekeeper in Winston-Salem, wrote a really good 2-part article about bee sting allergies in Bee Culture magazine a few years ago. NCSU has it posted here:
Part 1
Part 2

I hope this helps.

Skee seems to be developing an allergy to bee stings.

First one he got, he had no serious reaction. The second one he got,
the next day the finger he got stung on swelled up and he had some
redness and swelling on the back of his hand.

What are some good remedies to have on hand to help with any future
stings? Is there any way to lessen the severity of an allergic
reaction?

We don't want to have to give up bees just because of a minor allergy.

Thanks for any advice!
