Responding to some of Geneva's "terms"....Tom Grizzle


LD50: The dose required to cause death is 50% of the animals tested (LD =
lethal dose). This is a study done in rodents (lab rats and/or mice) and is
(to my knowledge) not done much (if at all) anymore.

miticide: A compound/chemical that kills mites.

pyrethroid: Any compound/chemical that is a member of the pyrethrin class or
family. Chrysanthemums contain members of this compound family naturally.

organophosphate: Abbreviated OP. OPs are also a class of compound/chemical
that replaced organochlorines, some of which were used as nerve gases in
WWI. They can be very toxic and persistent in the environment. They poison
a particular enzyme that is at nerve endings call acetylcholinesterase
(AChE). Toxic to insects, but also mammals.

acute toxicity: Acute toxicity data would be data that is designed to mimic
an overdose situation, with very high doses, like you took a handful of
pills. Acute toxicity data is collected, usually in lab rats/mice, to try to
understand what happens when you overdose. LD50 (above) is one form of
acute toxicity data.

sublethal effects: Effects seen at very high doses, but not so high that
they would cause mortality.

metabolites: Metabolites are the breakdown products of some
compound/chemical, often from our liver. This can be very important with
some pesticides. Take for example parathion, a commonly pesticide. It is
metabolized (broken down) to paraoxon, which is VERY toxic, but parathion
itself if rather harmless.
