A colleague of mine from Germany was visiting a few weeks ago. We took her over to the NCSU Bee Lab where they were extracting honey. She said she does like to use a heat gun to uncap but it only works well on new wax that has only ever had honey in it. If the frame was ever used to raise brood the heat gun method did not work very well.
I bought an uncapping knife at the meeting this weekend. I like the hot knife but have found them to be unreliable. Lately I have been using a cappings scratcher but look forward to giving my new knife a go next time.
