Could we please stop using the term chemical free.

Water is a chemical.  Bees are made up of chemicals.  You really need to specify what you mean.  Do you mean only natural products?  There are natural products that are really nasty.  Botulism toxin is among the most toxic substances known.  I had friends who would put tobacco leaves in their smoker to kill mites - totally natural.  But they wouldn’t use Apiguard because it was man-made.  Except Apiguard is thymol, one of the oils found in the herb thyme.  I’ll guarantee you that toxicity of all the crud in tobacco leaves far exceeds the that of thymol.

Clarifying what you mean might head off any misunderstandings too.  If there are practices that are natural, but you don’t find kind to your bees, setting down guidelines might let everyone know exactly what is expected in the “kind to your bees beeyard”.

I have had chemical-free bees at Whitted Bowers Farm for several years. I would love to be a part of this group. Please put my email address on the list. I am so glad that this group is forming.

Well, that was silly.  I sent an invitation to the Group , but my Yahoo address isn’t a member.

If you haven’t already indicated that you are interested, today, shoot me an email and I’ll get you connected.

Actually, I had killed the group because I was feeling lonely in it all by myself.  I have, however, recreated it so we have a place to plan without cluttering up the OCBA list.

Once there is someone involved besides me, I will very happily share administrative tools.

Thanks Lewis and Hi Everyone,

I agree...its been a busy few days on the OCBA for sure. I am very happy to see the response to this offer in less than one day. I know of at least three more people who haven't even chimed in yet.

To all that are interested: I would like to invite you over to our mini farm for the first meeting to discuss this further and make a plan about what the groups interests are and frame up a "phase one" plan that we can take to the next OCBA meeting. I have been talking w/ Kitty & Chuck and others about this and she has started a yahoo group to invite others in the extended community. So like Lewis said...lets make it happen.

I will call & confirm w/ the the other folks that I was already in talks with prior to this offer and send out a few dates so we all can compare schedules.

Sound Good?  --  Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Initial response to the chemical free initiative has been very good.  Now it is up to the chemical free folks to organize, develop a plan, and make it happen.

Hello Beekeepers,
I would like to make a proposal that OCBA set up a chemical free beekeeping group to teach and demonstrate chemical free methods.  I'd like for us to give our chemical free group a grant of $500 to purchase equipment, queens, bring in speakers, or whatever they need for this thing to grow legs.  At the very minimum, I would like for OCBA to have a chemical free demonstration yard managed by the chemical free folks that would be used to teach and demonstrate these methods.

The bee yard could be any where that the group chooses.  I went by Whitted Bowers yesterday and spoke with Rob Bowers.  He is willing to host the chemical free bee yard.  I have been keeping bees there alongside Natalie Sadler for several years now so we already have a built in relationship with him.  The downside is that it is in N. Orange and perhaps not very convenient for all.  The up side is that his 52 acre farm is certified organic and certified biodynamic.

I've already run this rough idea past the exec committee and it certainly has their approval.  Now I would like for our chemical free folks to organize and decide if this is something that they would like to do.  From there we can work on the details.

Cheers,

Lewis
