Jim,

If you've got your hive on a raised stand with legs, the classic advice is to set each leg in a can and fill the can with oil. The ants will fall into the oil as they attempt to climb up to get into the hive. At least that's the way it's supposed to work --- I've never needed to try it.

If your hive isn't on a raised stand yet, then that's Step One. My stands are simply made from two 2x4s. One is cut in half to make 4-foot side rails (perfect for 2 hives side-by-side), and the other is cut for the cross-braces and legs. You'll want the legs to be 14 to 16 inches high. That's high enough to deter pests and still provide a comfortable working height.

Let us know if it works!

I am a new bee keeper and my top feeder is attracting a lot of ants including fire ants.  How do I prevent the ants from getting to the feeder?

Thanks!
