I believe you're correct. You probably left a lot of foragers behind when you did the split. Wait a while and check again. Are you sure the old queen went with them? Check and see if old hive is making queen cells. If not and the old hive is, you didn't get the queen. Remember that they have to have larvae less than three days old for a new queen.
