Thanks Karen, Richard and Jim. Unfortunately I don't know the rootstock, but I will try and contact the nursery I bought it from to find out (not holding out too much hope though, not usually the type of info they offer).
 
I am happy to leave the sucker and see what happens. My only real concern is the orange spots we found on the main trunk that I talked about in my earlier post.  Can anyone confirm if this a form of rust or other disease?  I am worried as I have other trees nearby.  Also, would this mean that the sucker could be infected?

Caren,

I second Karen Kellogg's suggestion - you have a healthy rootstock that has survived your climate and soil - so make use of it and graft on a new topstock - easy to do, and you will be far ahead compared to getting a new tree.

I believe you could also let it grow and try using it as rootstock--graft a local peach scion on it...
