Subject: Re: [NAFEX] Pummelo

Is there a source that mentions what chances of success one might have trying different citrus from seed?  I’ve found several that say Pummelo is commonly grown from seed, but of course, as Phil says, that doesn’t mean it will come true to type.  In fact, sources mention that named varieties are grafted.  It’s my rule of thumb that citrus can be grown from seed, and will often come true to type, but variances can certainly occur.

Here’s a reference re: Pummelo seed:  http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/pummelo.htm

A page on citrus from seed: http://h2othouse.com/html/citrus_from_seed.html

And a request: I’ve been looking for tangelolo (tangelo x grapefruit) for years, after tasting the very refreshing and completely non-bitter Lavender Gem tangelolo.  I hear there’s a second commercial variety coming along in Florida.  I have found a source in Southern CA – I’m in Northern – and after years, the intrastate quarantine seems to be lifted.  But they’re pricey.  Anyone else know of a source for plants or seeds?

And Phil – which citrus are you growing?  I envy you the number of plants.  No room here for so many.  Right now I have a Kaffir lime and an unidentified orange, Valencia-like if not Valencia
