This mailing list seems to be more useful than Pomona itself, which no offence intended, has NOT impressed me in the two issues I have read.

Moreover the mailing list seems to be freely available to anyone to subscribe.
*And* the archives are available freely on the web.

I don't have a problem with paying membership dues, but I would have expected the roster to be available to all paying members, and in my view, the only reason to charge a fee for a roster would be if it were printed on paper and sent through the mail. Now that it's not the 1980s anymore, we have other options, as all of us computer users have found to our relief and pleasure.

If one of the NAFEX members were so dead set on misusing names and addresses, they could order the paper roster and scan the names in using an application like Ofoto, no need even to type them up. I don't see that we save anything by throwing up roadblocks at every turn to information sharing which does not cost the organization anything in paper or postage. If NAFEX needs additional funds, why not simply raise the membership fee? I feel that it's unbecoming to try to wring $ out of people who have already gladly paid to join up.

Yes, you have to pay for it. That is why you get so much unwanted mail.
Someone has sold your name. If folk want to use the Roster, pay the fee.
Remember NAFEX needs your financial support. Open your hearts, minds and
wallets.

PS You have extraordinary benefits from NAFEX in POMONA alone. Where can you
get this information for $13.00?

Is this info only available to NAFEX members who "purchase a roster"?

In the information age, I think this needs to change. Surely we could
download a roster from somewhere - if there was concern about it
"leaking" to non-members then we could each have a password to the site.

Or, just put the roster up directly, on a password-protected web page.
Or make it possible for members to request an electronic copy of the
roster, by email, to be emailed to them directly from whoever maintans
the file. That would take the least amount of technical know-how of all.

It's a bit startling to me, after joining NAFEX recently, that it seems
Pomona and the lending library are about all the immediate benefits you
see... and much of Pomona now seems to be drawn from this mailing list,
which for those who didn't know, is already available and archived
publicly on the internet. (as indeed it should be).

Purchase a Roster. The members are listed by state with addresses.

Hello,

What would be very interesting to me would be a map of the U.S. and Canada
indicating the concentration of NAFEX members by state/province.

This would allow those states/provinces with high NAFEX membership to form
local chapters.

The benefit of local chapters is immence. People get to meet, chat fruit
and nuts for hours, share local/regional experience, and share plant
materials.

No matter how much I enjoy this forum and Pomona, nothing beats sitting
down face to face with local/regional people and sharing your interests.

Later,
Tom
