I happened to be in a local bookstore and noted they still have the 1936 and
1937 USDA yearbooks which focused on livestock and crop breeding. In an
interview with SSE a few years back, Edwin Meader praised these books, and I
ordered my own copies then via the Internet. 1936 is mostly grains and
livestock, 1937 has articles on truck crops and fruit, even nuts, dogs, and
bees. The bookstore phone # is (931) 528-6780. I don't know if any of you
have the Yearbook titled "Plant Diseases", but I probably consult that one
the most of all. I have been talking old roses with a local rose explorer,
and she's been telling me about the horrors of rose rosette virus. She said
that she'd talked with wheat breeders about similar viruses, and even heard
a speech by an Egyptian specialist on a similar virus that attacks date
palms. He'd been sent over here to study rose rosette in hopes of new ideas
on control. The USDA book mentions not only rose rosette, but has an article
about a truly horrifying virus that hit the greenhouse chrysanthmum industry
years ago. I think one could learn a lot about life in general from this
book. Not mentioning AIDS in so many words of course. Donna
