The area of the country makes a tremendous difference in ripening.
Here on the Oregon coast we are in zone 8 but it is meaningless for
determining ripening,
We ripen way later than most areas.
For instance Niitaka does not ripen till the end of October if then.
We get very little heat buildup.
The temp all summer long rarely goes above 70 and goes down to 50 almost
every night.
This year even the Chester blackberries are just getting ripe now. The
main peak will be the middle of Sept.
20th Century will be ripe the first of Sept.
Shinsetsu does not seem to get enough heat to ripen at all. So it is a
failure for me.
