I don't know about Australia but in the US each agency usually publishes a
glossary and a "how to" for each form or activity which defines each block
or data element. These would be uniform across a discipline and reduce
regional peculiarities. Airline pilots have roughly a vocabulary of 1500
English words worldwide, There are ASTM published terms as well as other
agencies.
Do you call a motor vehicle with over 1000 gallons of water a tanker or a
water tender? In California it's a water tender because tankers have wings
and use pink stuff.

Hi Una
I am not to sure what you are actually after , but you gave me a great idea.
When we get brand new members in the unit they invariably get confused with
the abundance of acronyms and SES speak.
e.g sitrep , mp ,IC ,SMEAC etc. I am going to look into this and maybe make
up a dictionary for our newbies.

So I am thinking about developing a training log book for MSAR. One thing
many SAR log books have is a controlled vocabulary of activity type. I
request your assistance developing a controlled vocabulary for MSAR
activities.

Here is one controlled vocabulary from a dog training log that I use.

Unit
SAR
Assist
K-9
Non K-9
Training
Search
PR
Meeting
Hug-A-Tree
Area
Trailing
Evidence
Cadaver
Disaster
Obedience
Agility
Water
Paperwork
Other

How do you characterize your SAR horse training activities? What words do
you use when you talk about your activities with SAR team mates?

Thanks,

Una Smith
