You also should stress that if this turns into a crime scene and they do not take care, it could mean that the perpetuator may not be able to be charged.  Most people understand this but should be said again, especially since this is turning into a body search and clue search.

Thank you Chris.  Great information. Even though this team leader was given this information I don't think he was paying attention. I just talked to him on the phone and gave him the advice everyone has passed on and told him he will be in charge of making sure there is no running to get to the location site and all the other info. I hope part of it sinks in. These guys have not had any training but stepped forward to help  and I do think there is a power play going on between two of the team leaders wanting credit. Not a good thing, they have lost sight of what they are supposed to be doing. Tomorrow will tell.

Good advice was given below. I would also stress two things with the newbies:
1- you are mostly looking for evidence. You must go slowly and look carefully. Give them a spacing to maintain. Tell them it could be something as small as a piece of cloth. Then tell them if they think they see something to back off, hand off horse to another person, and tag around the item 10 feet away. Record and call in GPS location.
2- their horses are their best partners in knowing if something is "off" in an area. Whether it be a DB or a live person their horses WILL alert them to it but to do so they must be kept at a walk and they must pay attention to their mounts.

Those two things will help slow all volunteers down because it gives them specific goals that require a slow and steady pace and alertness. Many volunteers have NO idea what they are supposed to be doing and do end up doing the wrong thing.

HOpe this helps.

Prepare grid maps hand out to all MSAR s

Same areas
Have leaders exchange phone # or use w talkies
That will give some control and accountability
Last, ask any law enforcement to encourage all msar to report to one staging area
