You work search at the walk, period.  If they cannot control their mounts to a walk give them something else to do where speed may help, like running messages or supplies. Try to keep the task groups to 3 or so, one of yours, someone who knows the area well, and the newbie.  The horse does most of the work so make sure there is an empathy between the horse and rider.  Any rider who has to concentrate on controlling the horse instead of looking is not doing anybody any good.

Try reading the material at www.sepasar.net or in the archives.

Subject: [MSAR] Search for Lauren Spierer

Hello All,

We have been searching in the Bloomington area for Lauren Spierer, missing IU student. So far not successful. We have another search scheduled for tomorrow. Saturday morning June 18th.

Question: We have a lot of horseback riders joining in the search that have no experience. What is the best advice you can give me for preparing these people for the search. We had a search on Tuesday and fortunately only 19 riders showed up and it was easy to work in teams but we had one team that went off like they were going to the races. I tried to emphasis caution and care for the horses as well as the riders and preserving the scene but I do think in their excitement that did not happen.

Yvette
