Irv,

Thank you for your comments about US Army military caparisoned horses.
Please note that when the time comes, this will NOT be a military
funeral, although there will be a military casket team present.

Laurie Platt was second in command (with TROTSAR) for 5 years, our MSAR
team does not have Generals and our top field officer wears full bird
insignia.
I suggest you do some research about the use a rider less caparisoned
horse for fallen public safety personnel. The fact is; it's common to
have a rider less horse present for a fallen public safety responder
regardless of rank. This is also true for fire fighter personnel; a
fallen fighter from 9-11 was given the honor of a rider less horse in NY
City.

Regards,

T'mi
Chief
TROTSAR Mounted Team

Unfortunately this has come up before. According to the US Army a rider
less horse, full tack and boots turned back, is reserved for an
individual
burial of a field grade officer (bird colonel) or higher when a military
funeral procession (caisson, firing squad, etc.) is present. The horse
would be led by a senior NCO (master sergeant or sergeant major) and
should
be appropriate-- tall, groomed, black. Often a caisson horse is used
because they are used to the duty.

This does not mean you can't do it-- there is no law involved, just
tradition. The Philadelphia Police Commissioner has instituted the
practice
for all police funerals in the City, and he doesn't even have a mounted
unit
yet. You may want to consider a horse drawn hearse and/or a mounted
escort
of pall bearers.
