Shirley,

I don't know if you got my earlier note, but I am planning to be Texas tomorrow, and have an open day on Wednesday, 16 DEC due to a cancelled appointment.  I can be in Austin tomorrow night, and would like to get together with you and any of you local MSAR folks to discuss our respective efforts to get an MSAR unit started.  Would that be convenient with your schedule?  Please try to call me if this works for you.  Thanks.

Shirley,

We prescreen both the rider and the horse/rider combination.  When developing your entry horse and rider testing, I suggest you research several of the State and local MSAR standards that have been adopted by government agencies, then add any specific skills that may be unique to your response area/region.  Referencing approved MSAR standards provides validity to your team’s testing procedures.  Keep in mind that the entry level MSAR procedures should test the disposition and willingness of the horse, as well as rider control and confidence.  The NASAR book store sells two books on Mounted Search and Rescue that were written by Kathy Roberts, which has some very good information/recommendations for new MSAR teams (both books are a little dated (pre 9-11) but they still provide an excellent source of information).  Additionally, ASTM International will be releasing their recently approved MSAR Responder Level I (basic) Standard sometime within the next 2 to 3 months.  Currently the ASTM MSAR document is under review by ASTM editors in preparation for final print and will be available for purchase at that time.

As for the rider, it may be a good idea to require some perquisites before they can even be tested.  Applicants need to come on board with the mindset that performing MSAR mission is a volunteer public service and is in no way like being a member of a riding club.  A copy of TROTSAR’s perquisites can be found online at www.trotsar.org on the” join our team” link.

PS: I hope the TROTSAR MSAR standards that I sent you provided some useful information.

Hello All,
I am starting a MSAR team with a co-leader and we are wondering what other MSAR teams out there do to prescreen their riders and horses.  Basically, we are wondering how do you test your riders/horses for being safe and qualified to serve on a MSAR team.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Shirley in TexasT'mi,
