In recent conversation, the Lippizans were mentioned and someone had mentioned that the levade was a manuever that the horse performed so thatit coult thwart the arrows of the enemy becasue the raising up of the horse allowed the arrows to hit the breast plate the horses wore when in battle.

The levade was also a manuver that the Generals or point riders would do to oversee the terrain or look back at his troops.  Thevery rasing up of the horse gave the General more height to peeer over what it was he was looking at and assessing.

Often General Washington in pictures is portrayed riding a white stallion that is rearing up.
Surely the General was looking distantly towards where he was heading or looking at his troops.  Certainly his mount was not a bit unruly!

Just a thought!
