Regarding Felicia and Joe's and their commentary below...Yes, the media can have a tendency sometimes to over sensationalize in tradgedy which is a shame when seeking truths. Seems mysterious disappearances, or disappearances of passion crimes, abuse are always game for a good story for them.  High power or high profile cases unfortuneately can feed the media causing a frenzy..

It is beyond me why a millionaire would want to fake his own death, although if you are a victim of such sensationalism, privacy for your sanity can become a serious issue to many people seeking refuge away from their everyday living which can often involve every day hounding from such or others.  With the rich, money would certainly not be an issue on one hand, but on the other, the money could be the root of the problem too as in greed of others close to him or her or anyone as a victim and in foul play...trying to generalize here.

Some, I would imagine are driven by the shear bullying.  They get pushed to the brink to become someone they are not and either forced to defend themselves, or are forced to fight back either or submit to the chronic harassment.  LE's hands seem to be tied until the brusies or the full extent of brutallity is committed even after numerous complaints have been by the victim.  All LE can do is tell them, just keep making the reports...even thought the reports just seem to go no where.  We all know the case  and issues of Lady Diana and the media there.  Everyday people can suffer other forms of bullying from others as well.

Whatever happened to the idea of Crime Prevention?  But then I guess we cannot assume that LE will will be caped crusaders getting anywhere in the knick of time thus also giving criminals a sad advantage if they are hell bent to do their horrors.

Well, thanks Felicia for the URL.   Seems it was one of those cases that just seemed to disapear like the victim himself. Just like Stacy Peterson..  I could imagine though being a woman and suffering harassment, perhaps in her case, she would fake her own death to get away.   That to me is not unfathonable in as much as her spouse could possibly have been her murderer.  Women in abusive relations often have a horrific time of getting out of a bad marriage.  But I also have to wonder on one hand why the spouse is the first prime suspect.  As there are some criminals out there that thrive on just reaking havoc and bulling a couple in a good relationship because of jealousy as well.  .

And yes, the corrected spelling, thank you, was to STEVE FOSSETT.

I've been lurking on the list for a couple of weeks -- we are hoping to start an MSAR unit in western Pennsylvania.  Hey, there might already be one!  Haven't found that out yet.  And I need to know if there are written protocols we can study or certifications we need to achieve...

But I saw this thread and I thought it might help to clarify before any further rumors spread.  Neither the wreckage of Steve Fossett's plane nor his body has been recovered.  Please read this press release:  http://www.cap.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&nodeID=6192&newsID=4486.  Also, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/2466003/Adventurer-Steve-Fossetts-widow-dismisses-faked-death-claims.html

If you've ever been interviewed by journalists, you know how easy it is to have your words used out of context.  And our entertainment media has certainly primed us to consider the possiblitiy of faking one's death!  Yep, what a great story that would be; great movie too -- if it was true.  Okay, as a writer, it is a great story even when it isn't true.

Just last week, I had the chance to talk with a few people actually involved in the search.  The terrain out there is so rough that they searched the same areas repeatedly at different times of the day so there would be light at different angles and that light would have a better chance to penetrate deeper into the ravines.  I'm used to the rolling hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, tree covered, yes, but still negotiable by horseback or foot, and certainly 98% of their depths visible from the air.  Imagine searching those areas!

No, he has not been found. Last week I heard the end of a story that implied that he may have faked his disappearance.
