As you are aware FAA regulations are based on weight, features,  and altitude.  There are transit corridors for unmanned aircraft as they must rely on ground controllers and TCAS for collision avoidance.  Some, like Global Hawk, have no ground controller and couldn’t avoid a VFR conflict in transit.  This is a vehicle as big as a light aircraft, turbofan powered, very low heat and light emissions, and essentially no RF emissions, while it self deploys from the US to anywhere in the world.

It is also my understanding that the FAA wants to regulate the use of UAVs in part for safety reasons.  They are a great tool, but have limitations in forested areas.  Dana Snyder, CAP
