I mentioned this once already, but due to a neck injury/whiplash myself, I have used a soft medical neckbrace in the past, as well as anytime now that I need extra protection.  I have never participated in an MSAR search as of yet, our local team is still in its infancy.
However, I have used it while running gymakahna events (barrel racing, pole bending and keyhole sped events) It takes a little getting used to at first, and does limit how far you can turn your head, or look down, but it never effected me in compition, therefore, I feel it would work nicely during an MSAR search.
I'm sure Karen must already have one laying around if she suffered even half the injury I did, unless she suffered a more severe injury and they put her in an immobile neck brace...but if that was the case, riding of most any type is probably not recomended anyway aside from thereputic riding (hypotherepy)
I also believe the use/nonuse of any safety item should be at the discretion of an ADULT rider in ost circumstances...but when part of a team where searcher's safety is so crucial and could effect the search, they should conform to team safety regulations.
Just my 2 cents :)

Karen, the only thing I know of is what is used in the NFL.  What players wear looks pretty cumbersome and is likely used to prevent necks from snapping backwards.  It is a good idea and I don't know how useful it would be if a rider came off and their head was forward.  The neck guards would be at most athletic supply places.  Let me know what you think and if these just take getting used to.    I do not know if they limit visibility for SAR work.  Dana_______________________________________________
