I had this experience only once, and that was enough....
Always keep the trough topped off in bad weather, and know that your
generator is in working condition, so your trough heater can continue
to run. Additionally, have gasoline for on hand.

Another Ohio girl.

Negative temps here in So Cal mountains!! We have a heater in our pump house but the water froze IN THE GROUND. No water for two days now. We've been schlepping it from a neighbor's house who has water (city water). Everyone in this area with wells are in the same situation as us. Three feet deep is apparently not deep enough for these temps!! About an hour ago we managed to break loose some of the ice in the lines but now the pump is acting up. Sigh. Add to that emergency list- electric pipe zapper and spare well pump.....

The horses on the other hand do not seem fazed at all by the cold and are acting 100% normal except for being excited that we are feeding them four times a day instead of two. Gotta keep them generating some heat!
