Also, for some jobs, you may be able to check with Human Resourses. My
previous employer had a cost-code for "community service" and charged any
lost work hours to that code, but I'm sure you still have to be that great
employee to get that privilage.

Thought I would request ideas on rain gear. Our group is in the process =
purchasing rain gear for all the members. Our requirements are: =20
1. Tough
2. Bright and reflective
3. Suitable for riding
4. And not a budget breaker

Over the years we have used rain suits, ponchos, and jackets as well as
slickers. It all depends on how wet you want to get. Colors were bright
red, yellow, and light blue. As to being a budget breaker, I don't know
what your budget is but you don't always get what you pay for.

Unlined Nylon rain gear was the driest and the cheapest but was like living
in a bag. Gortex lined was the easiest on the rider because it breathed but
was the most expensive. My current solution is to keep a Goretex lined
nylon hoody in my saddle bags most of the rainy season and to line my horse
side saddle bag with a red nylon poncho in case I caught out without or it
is too cold for the rain jacket. There are also ultimate emergency garbage
bags for others.

The pants of the rain suits tended to fail in the saddle area from abrasion,
and the legs tore on brush. There was also limited mobility on the ground.
The other gear was designed to be worn over cold weather clothes but it
often became bulky and sloppy.

I have found that using multi-layer (removable liners) jackets with rain
resistant outer shells works better than dedicated raingear in most
instances. The outer shell takes the beating and protects the moisture
barrier and the synthetic fiber insulation inside. You can zip out the
liner for cleaning and maintenance or if it gets too hot. And a good
quality unit from REI or EMS or a uniform shop costs less than anything a
riding jacket place will offer. Maybe Carhart at the TSC would work out
also.
