Sue,

When riding here in Illinois it can get very hot and humid. I have found
that all helmets are very comfortable in the sun. The visors keep the sun
from the eyes, and the foam insulation that keeps the brain safe is also a
great insulator. In the winter when it can be very cold and windy here, I put
a fleece cover on the helmet to cover the vents and find them to be very
warm. The fleece covers can be purchased in tack supply catalogs and not
only cover the helmet but come down under the chin to help keep the neck and
face warm. While these helmets look like they would be hot in summer and cold
in winter, this is just not the case.

Lois, I don't know if your helmet has a warranty, but some companies will
replace the heavy styrofoam inner lining if it cracks after a fall or blow
for almost no charge. The outer shell can appear intact, but if you
sustained a significant impact or dropped it, there can be damage you cannot
see. If there is a question, some hospital X-Ray departments would possibly
check it for cracks (as a courtesy), if you ask. I would tell them why you
need the helmet for your service work. I would hope your hospitals extend
the same courtesy to you that our local sherriffs show to me as a former ER
nurse.

The newer sport helmets with multiple vents are great. I have a fun,
brightly colored jockey-type cover that helps me feel more visible in hunting
season. Being on a bay quarter horse in BDU's or uniform, we (Civil Air
Patrol) could be mistaken for a deer.

When you can, please let me know if auxiliary Airforce (CAP) can be
included in the Sept. MSAR training in Illinois. Thanks! 1st Lt. Dana
