I guess my biggest uphill battle is that most counties in our area are small.
For example, Moore County, TN is aka metropolitan Lynchburg, TN. Otherwise,
the whole county is basically one city. (this was a politcal move to keep
another county from moving in.. Lynchburg may sound familar....Jack Daniels
TN whiskey is made there). The nearest large county is 1.5 hrs away in
Nashville. Is this a lost battle?

Interesting - I hadn't heard that regarding the mules. Does this tendency
exist even when the weanlings are running with others for companionship? Or
when the mom is distant instead of visible?

Extended family through my son-in-law - the whole family is huge into
backcountry packing, does MSAR Packing, etc. - has also bred for a few
mules, but they normally wean at 4-5 months so they haven't had that
experience.

I know of agitated horse weanlings at initial separation who have crashed
into gates, fences, and even tried jumping pasture fencing during weaning.
Mules commonly do the fence jumping better, even as youngsters. ;-/

We usually have a couple of foals born within a couple of months of each
other and try to wean in pairs. We run those mares and foals on the same
pasture pre-weaning, then when we remove the mares the foals have each other
for company. We also try to wean on the date recommended by the Farmer's
Almanac when both foals are 4-5 months old. That combination normally works
well, and it is rare for us to have noisy, agitated weanings.

Sometimes we'll also run a good babysitter retired mare or gelding with the
youngsters, particularly if there is only 1 foal ready to wean in that
period.
