I second Irv's recommendation of the FEMA courses; some are
available as a self-study semi-correspondence course, as
follows. You enroll online or by phone or mail. FEMA mails
the course kit to you. You do any written work and complete
a scannable bubble form, on your own schedule, then send it
back. In turn, they send you a certificate of completion of
the course.

There are a number of businesses that will send an instructor
to your venue, but all are primarily mounted police programs,
not mounted SAR. You'll find their ads on the mounted police
websites. As with all such instructional businesses, you are
responsible for rounding up enough students, else the course
will be cancelled. Plenty of SAR training is available this
way too, but this is not something for a neophyte to organize.

Hence Irv's advice that you connect with local (county?) and
state SAR folks, and follow their lead. Going for basic SAR
training first is an excellent strategy. You will find that
even the steadiest horses need some extra education for MSAR,
but until you know the SAR ropes, you won't know what skills
an MSAR horse in your area needs most, so you'd be wasting at
least some of your time and money by jumping into MSAR unless
you already have a foundation of training and experience in
SAR or an established MSAR team to work with that can teach
you on the job.

By the way, you may find that MSAR-Riders by itself will go
a long way toward teaching you all you need to know. I hope
so!
