Before you hire somebody to teach you investigate what the local and state
authorities require and desire. I am certified by the Commonwealth of PA to
teach the ERI Search Management Course but it may not be what you need to
start off with. In addition to basic horse and trailer skills to get to the
scene you need familiarity with the local incident command system. There are
FEMA courses available on line for the federal standard system--free and
anywhere there is a computer.
You need some survival skills-- first aid, camping, map and compass. Find
the local orienteering association for map and compass. Contact the
International Society of Professional Trackers to find a member near you who
will introduce you to clue awareness and tracking.

Realize that most MSAR schools are going to teach you how to look while
riding. This is not a true search partnership. You must learn to read your
mount and handle the information concerning the environment he is giving
you. In this way you are searching with your horse, not just riding him to
look faster.
