Anyone looking at a "hard hat" or riding helmet who also lives in a hot
climate should be aware of the potential for heat-related health issues.
Commonly riding helmets have vents but may not be adequate for extreme heat.
(See article below specific to hard hats and heat.)

Locally the riders with vented riding helmets typically stop riding when the
temps hit @ 100*F (@ 36*C), claiming it is too hot to ride. I've had MSAR out
searching on days where the temp was 118*F (@ 46*C), wearing traditional
western straw hats. Horses and riders (all with adequate hydration) did fine
- and were willing to continue - but I sent them home after lunch each day.

Note that the western style "helmet" under discussion is actually a hard hat,
not designed for riding. The "Western Outlaw" hard hat meets OSHA
Requirements and ANSI Z89.1 199 which is the new Type II hardhat standard
related to both top and some lateral / off-center impact. For more
information see http://www.customhardhats.com/ansi.shtml

Cattle station workers walk out in hard hat protest
A number of cattle station workers in Western Australia's Kimberley region
have walked out after the introduction of mandatory hard hats. At least two
major land owners have applied the policy since the Jumbuck Pastoral Company
was fined $96,000 over the death of a 23-year-old jackeroo in New South Wales
four years ago. Kimberley station workers say hard hats are not practical in
the tropics and have led to several cases of severe heatstroke this summer.
The Pastoralists and Graziers Association is lobbying to make the wearing of
hard hats non-compulsory in employment contracts.

This has been a most interesting thread. I have felt all along there are
times when our soup bowl riding helmets were as much a problem as they
problem solved. Now Jorene has shown me another. We ride a lot in the rain.
We have to tape up our vent holes and put up with the helmet directing the
rain down our collars. I'd be the first to buy a wide soft brim helmet if
somebody made one.
