I'm not surprised to hear that. It isn't unusual nationwide for police / law enforcement to try and run a SAR in their own operational area. One handicap is while they may have experience running a crime-related incident, most law enforcement don't have actual SAR / SAR management training and don't understand the specialized resources.

You have taken on quite a challenge! One of your challenges will be to educate, or local LE may not understand even when to make the call for SAR assistance, much less what to do with them when those resources arrive. I think it will help that some of the SAR resources are now being Typed at the national level for possible Mutual Aid response. That will provide at least a basic point of reference for the locals.

AZ now has a POST class (I was asked to review and provide input) providing officers with some basic "first on scene" training on when search or rescue response may be needed as specialists, intro to SAR management training, and it includes mention of various specialized resources as well as containing a list of statewide SAR resources. I think a POST class like that would be advantageous in all states.

Hope you get the support needed to make the evolution to statewide coordination of SAR happen.

I is my understanding this was under the jurisdiction of local police. They weren't aware of the resources available. One of the aforementioned guys is an ambulance driver/paramedic who is stationed at that location. He was able to get search resources involved. Unfortunately there were problems with how things were run.
