Just my opinion, but I think contacting East Branch Ginger or Puna Organics with questions pertaining to disease makes more sense than guessing, or taking the risk that cold weather or time would resolve disease threat .

We spent a day with "Biker Dude" at Puna last January, and left with the impression that disease is an issue and is the reason he is so particular with the quality of his seed stock. Rather than perpetuating misinformation that I might provide, go to the source. By the way, he's a great guy and an excellent host! I believe he would respond to e-mails with your questions.

As I recall, we learned that most of the ginger root available for culinary purposes is imported from China, which would give me pause. If that is not the case, I stand corrected in advance.

We didn't get any ginger from East Branch this season because I got busy and forgot to order. By the time I remembered, they were sold out. Last years crop did well for us, although we need to work on building the demand for baby ginger in our customer base. All in all, it was a positive experience and I loved having it for my own pleasure.

Regarding disease, is it really an issue? I mean, it's understood
ginger is kind of a novelty item for growers in temperate climate, not a
staple crop. If you suffer from disease buildup, can't you just stop
growing ginger a couple seasons? I doubt whatever diseases ginger
suffer from has alternate hosts among what we grow here. Plus, it
probably won't survive an actual winter, if you where to freeze-treat
your tunnel by removing the plastic before the winter (which is
something I am planning to do every time the plastic will need to be
changed).

Trying ginger is on my tickler file of projects "to be done someday,
maybe". Seriously, if seed ginger is unavailable or cost-prohibitive, I
will just buy a crate of food-grade organic one when I get around to it.

Amen Lori! And, for what it is worth, we had about 15 row feet in a
high tunnel that had not been dug. Paul dug it last week in preparation
for spring planting in that tunnel, planning to sell it at our first few
spring markets. It was gorgeous. Fat, solid, and growing points
starting to show. As with seed potatoes, I would prefer to purchase
certified seed stock because of disease issues showing up over time, but
we will probably plant some of what we dug last week to fill out our
rows and evaluate it at the end of the season for productivity. Not an
ideal situation for anybody… But, hey, we’re farmers, we’ll get through it!

I'm grateful to be getting any ginger! Tough on East Branch-- she is so
nice and helpful, I'm sorry this happens to her...

FYI everyone-- I saved back some rhizomes over the 2011-2012 winter and
they sprouted and grew just fine last season. I also found a wooden box
outside with ginger still planted in it last February--after our
not-very-severe winter of 2011-2012, and the rhizomes were solid, in
fine shape and also grew ok. They overwintered apparently down to about
-2 with no protection except they were kind of in a sheltered area
behind our small hoop.
Last week I found a couple of leftover rhizomes in the high tunnel,
about 6 inches under 2 were definitely awful, but one was in good
shape. Slightly soft, but viable. hmmmm..
Luckily I have good rhizomes saved from last season and stored in peat
in our cellar.

As far as I know, East Branch IS Puna. There have been a lot of issues
for ginger in Hawaii in recent years. For example, an awful lot of it is
grown in bags now because there are so many disease issues associated
with the soils. Ouch! -Allan in WV

I think EVERYONE got shorted. Disappointing for us as growers, and
devastating for East Branch Ginger. Hopefully, Puna Organics will get
their issues ironed out, and East Branch can find alternative suppliers
so they aren't dependent on just one grower.

Anyone else get shorted?

Going to try some germination tests with the store bought stuff and
see what happens.
