Chris Reid:

I think you misread Jack Moffitt's comments with regard to the "Food Safety" bill.  You describe it as HR 875.  Jack Moffitt is talking about HR 2749. I've heard that the first bill (perhaps that was HR 875) was "scrapped" due to public outcry.  But they've followed up with another bill which is basically the same as the first, only this time with more Orwellian additions.  The first link is a short version of the most frightening provisions for small food-based businesses.  The second link goes into a more detailed account of HR 2749 from the Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.

* Big brother will want $500 to register with them, if a "majority" of veggies produced
are not sold direct to the consumer. Will Big Brother use it's usual
henchmen, the IRS, to audit vendors to see if they have skirted, fudged, or
mistakenly avoided the $500 fee? Or will they use the DEA and enormous
budgets to track down the newly created culprits? I don't know, because I'll
be damned if I am going to go out into a public Farmers Market and expose
myself to Big Brother, the IRS, the DEA or any new police agency the FDA
creates to enforce this nonsense.

Jack, if you could post the guidelines or bill summary that describes the situation, that would be helpful. In trying to look up this information, I cannot find the statements that match the "majority of vegetables produced not sold direct" info.

After seeing HR 875 hysterically misrepresented all over the internet, my new rule is "look at the original source first" before freaking out.

Your help in pointing to the language would be appreciated.

Chris Reid
