I get most of my seed through local salesman. They will come to the house and tell me exactly what varieties grow best in my area. They will also tell me what my neighbors grew and local gossip which is the backbone of rural culture...
In south Jersey the eggplant is like corn in Iowa. We all grew a hi bush OP type from a certain seed company who screwed up one year and knocked a lot of growers for a loop. That company does not do much business around here anymore...
Last year I bought dulcimer wood from a nice friendly small scale local mom and pop lumber company. There was a real mom and pop selling the woods and everything went well until mom and pop decided to use everyone's credit card numbers  to buy personal stuff. So beware, not all small scale folks in the seed business or whatever are always honest... Bob.
