P & K have to be in the soil at planting in adaquate amounts or side-dressed
soon after planting. Nitrogen stimulates photosynthesis's which causes the
plant to draw on P K reserves and enhance fruiting. Applying P or K alone
without N, will not do much for fruit growth in mid season. During peak
production periods when you need a growth response in days not weeks you need
fast acting fertilizers... Bob.

Does anyone use any organic fertilizer to accomplish the same thing with
their tomatoes? I thought that one of the other major elements (either P or
K) was supposed to encourage fruiting.

Im still waiting for ripe tomatoes too. People forget we had a cold wet May
that slowed things down.
Watering alot will reduce the chance of splitting but no matter how much you
water, if you get a 3" down pour all the fruit will split anyway. I throw a
handful of nitrate into each bush about now to keep the fruit sizing up. I do
the same for peppers and cukes. The so called shot in the arm of chemical
fertilizer is just what the plants need about now... Bob.

Folks -

I seem to hear it two ways: keep tomatoes well watered and never
water tomatoes once they start producing fruit.

If for no other reason that to spare them from splitting due to rain,
it seems they need to be watered regularly, but then there's the
water vs flavor issue.

how do you handle it?

And what about feeding once fruit is coming along? Too late to feed?
Or do they need it more than ever?

Thanks

ripe tomatoes)
