I am writiting this as a cautinary tale, and my only motivation is to alert other farmers.

My market crew got robbed at our Thursday market, in an 'upscale' town on the coast in Connecticut.  It was probably one of our best markets of the year.

Basically, one of my crew put the cash box in the front of the truck and went back to packing up the veg.  Another person was arranging crates in the back of our box truck.  The thieves worked in pairs, one of them distracted my crew with stupid questions while the other opened the truck passenger door and took the cash box .   It seems pretty obvious that they had cased out our stand as it was a very smooth operation.

I am relating this story because I feel very naiive and stupid at this point, and I hope no other hard working market farmer has to feel this way any time soon.  In the future we will look to regularly clean out the cash to a safe(r) place, so that if the box is stolen they will 'only' take change, rather than all our market receipts.   Nor is this the first time I have been robbed either,  Two years ago, in late fall, all my tools were stolen out of my open pole shed.  It's a nasty feeling to go get the chain saw, and see that it is gone, along with every other tool (except the scuffle hoes, guess they don't sell well at the pawn shop).  So my point is it doesn't matter that you are a farmer, or wether you live in town or in the boonies, or what kind of neighborhood your market is in, please don't be a dumb$ss like me.  Protect what you have worked so hard to aquire.  I guess for some reason or another I thought I would recieve mercy from thieves, being a hard working farmer and all.  If you are existing under this assumption please discard it at once.
