Thanks Mark. I have a lot of dead elm trees. Do you think they'd work if I cut them up and soaked them?

I just took a class on growing shitaki. I am going to try it on a small
experimantal basis. The basics are you need logs from live trees cut now
while the sap is down idealy white oak but other oakes will work. No
conifers though. you drill holes in the log about an inch deep ever couple
inches and fill them with spawn then seal over the holes with wax. stack
them up in the woods like a mini log cabin. where they are shady and
somewhat damp protect them from completely drying out cover them with
plastic palate covers if you have too in windy areas. let them set like
this for a year as the mycelia impregnates the logs(proper size seems to be
about 42 inches long and 4" to 6" in diamiter) the second spring after the
weather has warmed up well past frosting you submerge you logs in cold
water and let them soak over night then reastack them in about a week you
will have a flush of mushrooms about 1/3 of a pound per log. you let the
logs rest for 10 weeks then soak them again depending on your season you
get 3 to 4 flushes per season.

Any Shiitake Mushroom growers in this group? I have lots of logs and
thought I might give it a try, but don't have a clue where to start.
