We sell our garlic by the pound . ($6.00 table stock $10.00 seed stock and
$12.00 per pound braided) We have sold it in small mesh bags and in paper
pulp pints preweighed when we didn't have a scale.
If you wait until it is dry enough you can quickly clean the garlic by
taking off one paper layer and by cutting the roots.
We grow 15 varieties but usually take 4-6 varieties at a time. I have a sign
with a description of the type of garlic its taste etc over the basket of
each variety. With little paper bags under the baskets for people to bag
there own.
If we do pre bag in half pound bags ($3.00) then we add a tag in the bag
with the name & description of that garlic so there will be no mix up when
you have several varieties at once on your table.
Braids will not come unbraided when you take them to market. We take ours to
market in stackable bread trays.
Here in NC we are hot & humid We store our garlic in wire mesh stackable
trays we have made and they are placed in an air conditioned shed.

Hi folks! I am conducting a workshop this weekend, Laying Chickens: From
Choosing the Right Breed for You to Brooding Your Own Chicks to the Feed,
Care, and Management of the Home Flock. I will also be plugging the "Buy
Local" message.

Anyone have suggestions of online sources to enhance my presentation? I am
specifically seeking some printable material on:
1. Why Free Range is better
2. How to Support Local Farmers
3. Pics and Facts of Eggs or Chicken (general)
4. Fun Facts or How Raising Chickens can be fun, stress-relief
5. Jokes or funny printable material to "lighten up" the workshop

I have been to RuralRoutes.com and ATTRA (uses loads of their stuff)

Any help is much appreciated. I want this to be a very successful attempt
to collaborate with local businesses!

There is some good consumer info about the true cost of chicken/eggs from
the UW-Madison(Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems) site.
These ready-to -use informational flyers were created with suport from
FoodRoutes Network.
They highlight the "Price tag" and "cost tag" of different farm products,
and emphasize the Buy Local message.

To make this more "on-topic" for this listserve, CIAS has a whole batch
of these, including some on produce, including: tomatoes, strawberries,
sweet corn, and potatoes. If folks like and use these, please give us
feedback. Thanks.

John,

Am having trouble locating these on your site. Would you either post a
direct link or give me/us some idea which menus' to go through?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

How do you sell garlic at the market?
We have lots of very dirty garlic (about five different types) to sell
at four high volume markets. ($300 to $400 per hour -one person)
Earlier, we bunched the green or immature garlic and sold it for
$1.50/bunch. Now we have the dry bulbs and cloves to sell, but they are
covered with a fine layer of dirty clay. If they are packed into a
clamshell, the average weight of the package is about 1/2 pound.
Will they "keep" in the clamshell? How much to charge? Can the dirt be
washed off, or will the garlic then sprout? Washing will probably bust
the bulbs into individual small cloves.
We need to present the garlic so it will sell itself (even dirty?)
because our main emphasis is on high volumes of Blackberries, Peaches,
Tomatoes, Onions, and Potatoes, and there isn't time to have to explain
the garlic.
Yesterday at Sam's Club, they offered 3 pounds of very nice Mexican
Garlic for $3.88. (Beautiful, large and very white - nice to cook
with!) It was packed in a mesh bag.
I don't think braiding is anything we could do. (The braids would
probably fall apart between markets.)
If about a pound of garlic was put into a mesh bag, how much would it
sell for?
How do you store the garlic in this hot and humid climate so it will
last until November without rot or mold?

Tom and all,

Apologies for the Price Tag / Cost Tags being hard to locate on our
site. Actually, our webmaster is in the process of reorganizing things
to make navigation easier. At any rate, here is the direct link:

Clean the garlic by removing the top wrapper layer (this should easily
rub off if the garlic is well cured) and cutting the roots almost flush
with the base of the bulb. Never ever wash the dried bulbs with water.

I sell mine for a buck a bulb, I grow specialty hardnecks (garlic in the
grocery stores is one or two varieties of softnecks, generally). I
display mine in a basket. If you know your product-what varieties, what
each variety tastes like, how to use, etc.. you should have no problem
selling lots of garlic. recipes are good to have.

Store in a cool dark place in string bags. we store ours in the basement
after curing them for 6 to 8 weeks.
