A native fire ant population works wonders! 15-20 years ago, before
the fire ants moved in on us, we had to pick 10-20 ticks off of a dog
every day during tick season. For the past 10+ years, we have hardly
seen a tick. I can't really recommend establishing a fire ant
population, though. :-)

Get guineas. They eat them and are great entertainment.
