Adriana - I start my from seed in bunches like you described and put them
out later than I should have. I started them in January and transplanted in
early April. The ones I have started right now (seeded 2-4) I'll try to get
out my mid-March. As I recall I spaced them at about 6" both ways. It does
make them easier to pull - lots quicker that way but I did find that the
starting soil was really embedded in the bunch and they took more soaking
and spraying to get them clean.

I might have to agree with Eliot about the profitability of them but we use
a lot in our prepared foods for market and those that we take always sell.
I bunch them 7 to 8 to a bunch and sell them for $1.25. So I figure if I
sell 16 bunches, I've paid my $20 booth fee for the day.

Since I was just watering my scallions I was pondering the varieties also -
had poor germination from white spear and good from deep purple - it was
just the opposite last year!
