Theres much that could be said but I'll just emphasize what I think is the most important issue for quality - water. Onions have short root systems. They take a long time to develop bulbs. There are many opportunities for those short root systems to run out of water. They don't show it much until the end of the season when all you have are small bulbs. They need a fresh infusion of about 0.5" water every 3-4 days, more in really hot weather. Plant early. They are hardy and benefit from an early start on developing their roots. You can direct-seed them but the same rule applies - lotsa water. Also, don't let the weeds get ahead of you, especially grasses. Onions are NOT competitive.

Okay, onions are something I have never done but would really like to. Can someone give me the kindergarten primer on onions? Thank you!
