The market has has a couple of stories in the paper already with another
one in the works. We also have a little column in the paper (a weekly
paper)that lists what will be at the market that week, of course it's
usually hidden in the paper. I would like to do radio if we can get a
freebie PSA, but our committee member who has gotten the chamber to put up
$ for advertising doesn't like using radio (feels its ineffective). I will
be talking to him today about the direct mailing.

This is just a small town, of about 4,000 people inside the town limits,
another 3000 just across the river, and many more folks do their shopping
here, including folks that have lake/vacation houses about 20 miles away.
I hate to do much advertising when we don't have a lot to offer, but I get
the feeling that if sales don't pick up soon, my current vendors may
leave. We opened early because we had a couple of folks with bedding
plants and we wanted to capitalize on homeowners spring fever. We also
have a grower of hydroponic tomatoes. We have a great baker, but she's
with us only on Wednesdays. Another vendor brings free range eggs but
usually has only 10 doz. or so.

Anybody have any opinion on whether being a producer-only market would
appeal more to customers? We would be the only producer only market
around. Our customer base though is not too terribly concerned about
localness or so it seems. It might make a difference to other growers
though and get them to sell at our market instead of the 2 larger markets
each about 40 miles away that have a lot of reselling.

Gotta get weeding,
Amy
