One-day seminar covers cut flower production
RALEIGH -- A day-long class focusing on the basics of outdoor cut flower
production and starting a cut flower business will be held from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Feb. 19 at the Iredell County Agricultural Center in Statesville.

The class will cover such topics as: which cut flowers perform best in the
Southeast, steps to produce cut flowers, identification and control of the
most common insects and disease, nutritional problems, post-harvest handling
of fresh and dried cut flowers, evaluating marketing options, identifying
production and marketing costs, plant selection, and the basics of flower
drying.

Nationally recognized outdoor cut flower expert Dr. John Dole of Oklahoma
State University is the featured speaker.

The class is sponsored by the N.C. Commercial Flower Growers' Association
and the Association of Specialty Cut Flowers. Participants can earn one hour
of N.C. Pesticide Continuing Certification Credit by taking the class.

Registration prior to Feb. 10 is $50 for the first person of a firm and $35
for each additional person. After the early deadline, registration is $65
for each person. Cost includes all handouts, refreshments and lunch.
