however, using the --erase option will force also a block-copy from the source drive, which can only be performed if the source drive can be unmounted. which the boot volume cannot.

I fail to see from that how the lack of one will result in the drive being unbootable, as well as stand by the fact that I have asr'd a running volume to duplicate it, and then rebooted from that duplicate. The only step needed was to use either bless or the Startup Disk prefpane to bless the new volume.

asr has the --wrapper option, which makes drives bootable (or at

--wrapper forces an HFS wrapper to be created on the
tar get volume if the --erase option is used. Nor mally the creation
of a wrapper depends on certain filesystem variables. --wrapper is
ignored if --erase is not used.

Yes, that's right. It can't get the boot blocks. For something
like that you'd probably need to use something like
Carbon Copy Cloner like Scott suggested. I've also
had good luck with a program called Super Duper

Under tiger it should be possible since they added the option
to copy resource forks.

In my original email I was wondering if I could use rsync with
proper
parameters to do a full disk copy. Possible?

Well Retrospect is for people that don't know how to use rsync
anyway...
