Thanks a lot Craig, the snapshot worked for me.
Will keep you informed if I still get the memory leak.

2 simple remarks:

A) Why is there no instruction in the INSTALL file about autogen.sh?

"Brief Instructions" just shows:

$ ./configure --help
$ ./configure
$ make
$ make install

I believe the intention is that people can get snapshots and shouldn't have
to use autogen.sh so there's no reason to document it. Although
documentation for producing a release wouldn't hurt.

However, I did a bit of digging on the ftp server and it turns out snapshots
are working -- sort of. You can find a snapshot generated on 17 November
(the date of the last commit) at:

ftp://ftp.freetds.org/pub/freetds/current/freetds-dev.0.92.839.tar.gz

So what's broken is the last step that copies that to freetds-current.tgz.
Until and unless that gets fixed, I think the current workaround is to go to

ftp://ftp.freetds.org/pub/freetds/

and dig around in the "current" directory for whatever looks latest.

Everyone new to freetds will run these commands and face the same probs as me.

B) Regarding the "current" version available on www.freetds.org, why is this
left as is? Can anyone modify these pages? Just point to the git repository!

I must be missing something, because all of this sounds obvious and I would
wonder that nobody changed it already if it was so simple.

Snapshots have gotten broken and been fixed multiple times. Freddy and James
are busy and probably have more fun things to work on when they do have time
to do things. It is frustrating, though.

Can someone point me to the instructions to download FreeTDS dev version?

When I take the sources from https://gitorious.org/freetds/freetds, there is
no configure script.

The INSTALL file contains instructions to use configure... what am I doing
wrong?

You have to be on a Unix or Unix-like system with recent autotools installed
and run autogen.sh in a git checkout of the current source. If all goes
well, you should get a configure script. If all does not go well, you may be
building autotools from scratch, which is a rather unpleasant bare knuckle
experience for those of us unaccustomed to such things.

Actually you don't have to be using git as you can get a tarball of the
latest source at any time from this link:

<https://gitorious.org/freetds/freetds/archive/HEAD.tar.gz>

However, you do have to have autotools.

Why is the www.freetds.org still showing an old "current" download link
(0.92.377)?

The nightly snapshots have not worked reliably for years and there is an
aversion to putting generated files under version control. The script for
generating snapshots was posted to the list once with suggestions for
improvement solicited but I don't think there were any takers.
