We agree that you wrote domain\\user in order to escape the \ ?

Also, I tried connecting without the configuration file in this way:

TDSVER=7.0 tsql -H P reporting.domain.com -p 1433 -U "domain\username"

Which is why I got the "Server name not found in configuration files" error
below. But still nothing.
