...And I know about these drivers:
Microsoft ODBC, adabas, easysoft, empress, esodbc, informix,
intersolve, iodbc, sapdb, solid, udbc, unixodbc
root [~/DBD-ODBC-1.13]#

[...]

I do have unixodbc installed and I saw a thread that seemed to indicate DBD::ODBC + freetds + unixodbc could be used together, is that what i need to do? That is, build DBD::ODBC against unixodbc instead of freetds and use freetds's goods to connect() to MS SQL?

Apologies if this sounds patronising - it's not meant to be - but have

no worries, its the little things that trip you up and fresh can see the obviouse sometimes

you tried make'ing with ODBCHOME="/usr"? Normally that's where unixODBC is installed. Of course, if you know it's installed in /opt/ and not /usr/ , then ignore this.

It is in /opt :) I sort of gave up on DBD::ODBC and went for DBD::Sybase
