>I think if Paul wanted to say something this simply and clearly he could have.  That he doesn't means that this is something he is NOT saying.  Paul was smart, had a huge vocabulary, and used words with great precision.  When he wanted to call something crap, he did so without hedging or hesitating (recall "skuballa").

>Same as above.  If Paul wanted to say something this plainly, why didn't he just do it?  Certainly none of us thinks Wright more gifted than Paul?

I first should note that I'm not saying Wright is correct on the passage.  I just thought I'd pass along a summary of his comments.

As for the way Paul communicates, however, I think your criticism is off-base.  Paul frequently says things that we seem to understand, but does so in a way we would not.  In fact, one could argue that he is employing the huge vocabulary you mention precisely here, and with great precision.  Perhaps someone could correct me on this, but I believe that among those who took "analogy of faith" in the way Wright does were Greek Fathers; if that is the case, they obviously didn't think it such a strange way to put things.

On the other hand, Chrysostom appears to take it to mean that the prophet is supposed to speak in accordance with the measure of understanding of the *hearers.*  ("For though it is a grace, yet it is not poured forth at random, but framing its measure according to the recipients, it letteth as much flow as it may find the vessel of faith that is brought to be capable of."  Sorry for the awkward and archaic trans.; I only have the Schaff series.)  And he knew his Greek pretty well.  :)
