Why did Paul go as far west as the Aegean, rather than preach closer home?

In Acts Paul did not attempt to found a single church after his visit to
Jerusalem (Acts 15) until he arrived in Philippi.

This is supported by chronological considerations. Paul's Jerusalem visit
(Gal 2) was apparently at least 14 years after his conversion (49-50, say),
and he was in Corinth at the time of Gallio (52, say). There is a lot to
squeeze into the intervening period, so it is unlikely that he spend much
time evangelizing in Asia minor at that time.

My question is this: Why did Paul not linger in Asia minor? Was it because
those places were already being evangelised by other missionaries? Were the
'false brothers' (Gal 2:4) at work throughout the region? What other
speculations are possible?

Thanks,
Richard Fellows.
