Hi Perry,

I think the best intro is Roetzel, Calvin J. The Letters of Paul:
Conversations in Context, 4th ed., though if what you mean by
evangelical/conservative is championing of the authenticity of the Pastorals
and the like, it might not be what you're after. Another problem with the
titles you mention--all excellent in their own ways--is how dated they are.
Given your requirements, while I find a fair amount to disagree with in it, I
would HIGHLY recommend Ben Witherington's, The Paul Quest. I had a very
sharp honors student who is pretty conservative read it for a project last
semester and she loved it. She certainly learned a lot from it. For working
with conservative students, I really appreciate Ben's ability to present
serious scholarship in a readable and mostly conservative friendly manner.

You might want to check out the projects page of my Paul course for other
possibilities.

Subject: [Corpus-Paul] Introduction to Paul

Hello, all. I'm teaching a 1000-level class this fall on Acts and the
epistles--it's part 2 of an NT intro, the first part being Jesus and the
gospels, which I'm NOT teaching.

Anyway: I've chosen most of my materials, but I'm still looking for some
kind of introduction to Paul (or an introduction to the early church,
even) that I can have my students write a critical evaluation of.

It needs to be a. NOT a commentary, b. in print, c. cheap, d. evangelical
to conservative/centrist in approach, e. short, and f. simple enough for
hyper-hormonal eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds to read and evaluate.

What I have in mind would be something like Barclay's *Mind of St. Paul*,
or Bruce's *Apostle of the Heart Set Free*, although both are probably
too long and (I think) out of print. Longenecker had something like
this--*Apostle of Freedom* (?, is that the title, and is it still in
print?) Or something NT Wright has published under Tom Wright?

Any suggestions?
