Dear Charles,
One good way to access discussions of this word would be to consult
commentaries on 1 Corinthians, where it is used several times, and thus has
been the subject of research, especially relative to Pauline usage. The
growing consensus seems to be that there it is better translated
"consciousness," so that it expresses a social dimension, awareness of a
norm, or perhaps better, awareness of competing norms.
